MODEL: PROCESS

The Case for E-Business Outsourcing
When you want something done right, there are times when doing it yourself is not the best option. Even the best companies need to recognize the limitations of their operational expertise and know when to outsource certain e-business functions...

Chain Reactions
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. is looking to cut costs and hit its deadlines on the multibillion-dollar Joint Strike Force (JSF) contract. To that end, the Fort Worth, Texas-based company is upgrading its design systems so it can more efficiently share complete supply chain information with its subcontractors and key business partners.

Brand New Jargon, Same Old Customer Service
Listen to the next conversation you hear about CRM automation and processes, and IT, in general. Then ask yourself, how much is the jargon being used to add to our understanding of basic business concepts? Better yet, ask yourself whether CRM jargon is advancing the cause of improving customer relations...

Microsoft and Verizon Join Forces on Wireless Data
Microsoft and Verizon have joined forces in a manner likely to have broad implications for the U.S. wireless market. They have agreed to deliver mobile data services based on the MSN platform to Verizon's extensive customer base...

MODEL: TRANSACTIONS

E-Commerce: Hard Numbers
While every major analyst group predicts steep increases in e-commerce volume in the years to come, less thought is given to precisely which channels will enable electronic transactions. A new report from research aggregator eMarketer gives a snapshot of e-commerce metrics and indicates that electronic data interchange (EDI) is the predominant channel for e-commerce today. However, according to the research, EDI will give up share to e-marketplaces and Internet-based technologies, and by 2004 or 2005 the value-added network (VAN) might not be the predominant channel that it currently is.

Priceline Joins Fixed-Price Parade
In an effort to recapture ground lost to such competitors as Hotwire and Orbitz, reverse auction company Priceline has become the latest travel service vendor to climb aboard the fixed-price marketing train.

Sun Portals To Offer Yahoo! Content
Sun Microsystems has forged an alliance that will bring Yahoo's content to its enterprise portals. The pact is designed to drive adoption and use of such portals, which allow business users to access corporate e-mail and information on a single Web site...

MODEL: PARTICIPANTS

What's Your Supply Chain Type?
What does the term “supply chain” mean? Is your definition the same as your supplier’s? How about your competitor’s or your customer’s? The Center for Strategic Supply Leadership has identified 16 different types of supply chains in use today. Using this classification system, companies can determine where they fall on the supply chain spectrum—and whether the model they have chosen is the best one for their business.

Pivotal Goes Vertical
CRM software maker Pivotal has announced a group of industry-specialized applications for the investment banking, healthcare insurance, and real estate/construction industries. These are the first in a planned series of vertical applications targeting mid-size enterprises, the company said...

STRATEGY DEPLOYED

The Incredibly Quiet E-Commerce Explosion
E-commerce is garnering converts at an increasing pace, even though it is not grabbing the headlines it once did. "The emphasis of e-business has shifted away from the 'e' part to focus on the 'business' part," Meta Group vice president Gene Alvarez told the E-Commerce Times...

E-BIZ IN ACTION: Bottling Supply Chain Data
Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated (CCBCC) operates 93 bottling locations, all of which have to know what to put on their trucks on any given day. Unfortunately, the data that CCBCC needs to get the job done resides mainly in an IBM mainframe, which does a poor job of pushing legacy data in a useful way, and doesn't communicate well with CCBCC's Oracle and Manugistics systems. To solve the problem, CCBCC decided to work with three best-of-breed e-business software vendors rather than building a data warehouse. By closing gaps between its various systems, and refining the process of data extraction and reporting, CCBCC now gets real inventory visibility, timely forecasts, and the trucks roll with their proper loads.

Amazon Brings Back Old Rules in New Economy
These rules of the so-called new economy led Internet companies to sell merchandise at steep discounts and deliver it for free, but earned a place in the annals of stupid business practices after one too many online furniture store tried to swallow the costs of shipping solid oak bookcases.

BroadVision Narrows Focus
Consolidates products, cuts engineering staff and emerges with
next-generation 7.0 software

STRATEGY: MANAGED

Building Organizational Capital
IT can boost productivity, but the real gains for a business come from combining IT investments with investments in corporate culture and organizational practices, according to an MIT study.

How IBM Conquered the E-Commerce Software Market
While Big Blue's name was not always synonymous with e-commerce, the technology giant has become a major player in the sector in recent years. "They made a number of wise decisions in terms of forming strategic partnerships," Yankee Group program director Jon Derome told the E-Commerce Times...

Epinions: An E-Commerce Success That Almost Wasn't
In 2001, Epinions.com faced the same choice as scores of other dot-coms: Adapt or die. While the shopping information site had attracted millions of repeat users, it was wholly dependent on advertising revenue. "It was a pretty hard summer," Epinions CEO Nirav Tolia told the E-Commerce Times...

STRATEGY: EVOLVED

Will eBay Strangle Online Commerce?
EBay may have an imperfect business model, as Yankee Group analyst Rob Lancaster told the E-Commerce Times, but users clearly are buying into that model, and the auction giant eventually could overshadow other e-tailers as it extends its reach into other areas of e-commerce...

The Future of GPS
Whether making air travel safer, supporting down-to-earth scientific research or just directing cell phone users to a good local restaurant, devices employing global positioning system technology will play an increasingly visible role in daily life. In the United States, GPS already is used for navigation and highway assistance.

Instant Messaging Comes of Age for Enterprise
Hubz, a new Java-based instant messaging product unveiled by Digi-Net Technologies, could become a useful tool for enterprises that are taking to the Web to save time and money and build a sense of community among customers and employees...
