Review, an influential journal affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, on Thursday released a new list of the "Ten Emerging Technologies
That will Change Your World." Topping the list at No. 1 is "universal

No. 2 on the list is "synthetic biology," the assembling of genes into
networks designed to direct cells to perform specific tasks within the body. The
journal's No. 3 pick is "nanowire" technology, which are long, thin,

Every so often, our expectations of what is possible change. A new idea, an inspired
invention, a resourceful person or group appears and alters the way we think about
the world. Suddenly, sending a man to the moon, sprinting a mile in under four
minutes, replacing a human heart with an artificial one, are no longer laughable
propositions. We owe every quantum leap in our evolution as a society to those
sorts of catalysts.
